        "content": "<p>Customer asks for status of blocked bank account<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): A customer of the Standard Chartered Bank here<br>\nhas asked the authorities to immediately explain the status of<br>\nher account of Rp 1 billion which was blocked by the bank four<br>\nmonths ago.<\/p>\n<p>\"We need clarification. The sooner, the better,\" businesswoman<br>\nYee Mei Mei, a Hong Kong national operating a investment service<br>\ncompany here, told The Jakarta Post here yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\"Whatever the status of our account is, the central bank, or<br>\nthe minister of finance, or the police, should let us know,\" said<br>\nMei Mei.<\/p>\n<p>\"That way we'll know what steps to take,\" she said after<br>\nhosting a reception for the visiting Vanuatu Prime Minister<br>\nCarlot Korman, who was here on a one-day unofficial visit.<\/p>\n<p>The money was transferred by Dragon Bank's office headquarters<br>\nin Vanuatu, an island country in the Pacific Ocean, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Detectives of the economic crime section at the National<br>\nPolice Headquarters had questioned David Hawkins, chief executive<br>\nof the Standard's Indonesian office.<\/p>\n<p>National Police Spokesman Brig. Gen. Nurfaizi as well as<br>\nexecutives of the bank could not be reached yesterday for<br>\ncomment.<\/p>\n<p>Through her lawyer, Mei Mei also filed another lawsuit against<br>\nthree executives of the Standard Chartered to the Jakarta<br>\nMetropolitan Police, accusing them of having violated existing<br>\nbank rules by providing secret information of his customer's<br>\nidentities and account to a third party.<\/p>\n<p>City Police spokesman confirmed that Standard spokeswoman Rina<br>\nDjamal, along with several witnesses, has been questioned in<br>\nregard with the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>\"But the investigation is still going on,\" Iman told the Post.<br>\ndirector of PT Perdana Investco, a holding company.<\/p>\n<p>According to lawyer Rusdi, his client had been prevented from<br>\nclosing her bank account on at least three separate occasions in<br>\nJanuary, without legitimate reasons.<\/p>\n<p>\"The bank only informed my client that it was Bank Indonesia<br>\nwhich had advised Standard Chartered Bank to temporarily block<br>\nMei Mei's account,\" Rusdi said. \"But they don't have any written<br>\nstatement from the central bank.\"<\/p>\n<p>A latest release from the Standard Chartered revealed that \"it<br>\nwas advised to freeze the funds until it could be ascertained<br>\nwhether there was a link\" with the fraud at the Hongkong and<br>\nShanghai Banking Corporation Limited in Indonesia earlier this<br>\nyear.<\/p>\n<p>\"Such precautions accord with international best practice and<br>\nare not intended to cause any embarrassment to the account<br>\nholder,\" the release said, adding that \"Hongkong Bank has<br>\nprovided an indemnity to Standard Chartered in relation to the<br>\nfreezing of the account.
