Cuba offers coaches to Indonesia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Cuba has approached the National Sports Council
\n(KONI) about making available coaches and training facilities to
\nhelp develop Indonesian athletes, KONI official in charge of
\nresearch and development Imam Suyudi said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"Cuba has a population of 12 million and 30,000 sports
\nexperts, but they had impressive achievements in the Sydney
\nOlympic Games. Based on this, the authorities have offered us
\nlow-cost experts and training facilities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Cuba finished eighth in the 2000 Games with 11 golds, 10
\nsilvers and five bronzes, while Indonesia finished in 35th
\nposition by taking home one gold, three silvers and two bronzes.<\/p>\n
Imam said KONI was considering the suggestion, but the council
\nwould let individual sports organizations decide if they needed
\nforeign coaches and training facilities to prepare for the 2001
\nSoutheast Asian (SEA) Games. The biennial multisports event will
\ntake place in Kuala Lumpur in September.<\/p>\n
\"We will discuss the possibility with the sports
\norganizations. They know their needs better (than us) and they
\nunderstand which countries could supply the best coaches for
\ntheir athletes. After we finish discussing it, we can settle the
\ndeal.<\/p>\n
\"We can't afford to pay a lot of Cuban coaches, so we will
\nmake the request according to our financial capability. We can
\nuse this scheme for our SEA Games preparations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Imam said Cuba has gained worldwide recognition in several
\nsports, including volleyball, boxing, track and field, baseball,
\nbasketball and martial arts.<\/p>\n
Imam said Cuba offered Indonesian athletes the opportunity to
\ntrain in Cuba at a daily cost of US$40 for training sites and
\naccommodation. The cost does not include coaches' salaries and
\nIndonesian athletes' allowance.<\/p>\n
He also said KONI and sports organizations would set up a team
\nof advisers to help screen foreign coaching candidates.<\/p>\n
\"The advisers will accompany the contingents. They must be
\nselect people who can arrange training programs based on various
\naspects, including physical fitness, skills, mental ability and
\nmotivation. The advisers must also be experts in improving
\nphysical conditioning using certain techniques that do not
\nviolate international rules, for example, by avoiding the use of
\nbanned nutritional supplements,\" he said. (ivy)<\/p>",
