Crop failure awaits C. Java disaster victims<\/p>\n

The search for a missing woman in a landslide that hit the
\nPurworejo village of Plipir in Central Java has been abandoned,
\nwhile thousands of others are facing a serious plight due to a
\nmudslide that swept through their rice fields.<\/p>\n
A mudslide that followed heavy rains has buried hundreds of
\nhectares of rice fields in Plipir and two neighboring villages,
\nmaking it impossible for the farmers to harvest.<\/p>\n
\"Should we fail to harvest the crops, we cannot estimate how
\nmuch the government will have to spend on humanitarian assistance
\nfor the people because there are hundreds of hectares of rice
\nfield affected,\" Tri Gunadi, an official with the provincial
\nadministration, said on Sunday,<\/p>\n
The office, along with the local provincial agriculture
\noffice, are still seeking a solution to help the farmers, Tri
\nadded.<\/p>\n
The central government has delivered two tons of rice, 20
\nboxes of canned fish, blankets and instant noodles to the
\nvillagers, in addition to 300 packages of staple foods provided
\nby the local administration.<\/p>\n
\"People can ask for humanitarian assistance at the local
\nlogistics agency and the social affairs agency,\" Minister of
\nSocial Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah said over the weekend.<\/p>\n
At least 14 people were killed and a woman remained missing
\nafter the landslide hit Plipir on Friday.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, the local search and rescue team discovered the
\nbody of Paiman, 24.<\/p>\n
The missing woman is identified as Sarinah, 60.<\/p>\n
According to Abdul Muntholip, the village head, the rescue
\nteam would not continue the search for Sarinah on Monday and she
\nis presumed dead.<\/p>\n
But Abdul allowed local people to continue the effort
\nvoluntarily.<\/p>\n
The other 13 fatalities were Sukardi, 65, and his wife
\nSarinah, 60; Tukino, 39, his wife Ruskayaiti, 32, and their two
\nchildren Edi Rahmatdani, 11, and Ahmat Fifai, 3; Paiman, 24, his
\nwife Mursidah, 24, who was nine-months pregnant, and their
\ndaughter Nina Aryanti, 6.<\/p>\n
Tito's wife Siti Lestarini, 25, and their two children
\nFauziyah Verawati and Ibnu Saefudin, 6. were also killed along
\nwith Sukardi's son-in-law, Sagiman, who was staying overnight
\nwith them.<\/p>\n
The natural disaster also hit the neighboring regencies of
\nKulonprgo and Bantul, both in Yogyakarta, forcing dozens of
\nfamilies to temporarily seek shelter in neighboring areas.<\/p>\n
The landslide also affected hundreds of houses in Bagelan
\nsubdistrict. The mud caused slippery roads, endangering
\nmotorists.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile in Trenggalek, East Java, a local rescue team
\ncontinue searching for victims after a landslide that hit Temon
\nvillage recently.<\/p>\n
According to Trenggalek Police precinct chief Adj. Sr. Comr.
\nSuyono, the team would require around four days to evacuate
\nvictims as well as a few head of cattle that perished when the
\ndisaster took place on Friday.<\/p>\n
The police had earlier identified a victim named Muwadi, 70,
\nbut expressed regret for being unable to remove the body of the
\nvictim immediately, because of the difficult terrain.<\/p>\n
\"We need more time to evacuate the body from the site. It
\nwould take us perhaps about four or five days because the place
\nis difficult to reach,\" Suyono said.<\/p>\n
The landslide sunk 15 houses and seriously damaged six
\nbuildings there. Hundreds of head of cattle also perished,
\nincluding 60 goats and five cows.<\/p>\n
