Critics motivate shuttlers: Coach<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Critics from the media and badminton lovers have
\nmotivate Indonesia's women's players to prove themselves by
\nqualifying in the final round of the Uber Cup championships in
\nKuala Lumpur in May.<\/p>\n
Women's doubles coach, Imelda Wiguna, said in a meeting with
\nNational Sports Council (KONI) chairman Wismoyo Arismunandar and
\nvice chairman Arie Sudewo and the Badminton Association of
\nIndonesia (PBSI) chairman, Subagyo Hadisiswoyo, that the players
\nwere strongly motivated to prove that their generation was still
\nreliable in international events.<\/p>\n
\"The shuttlers intend to recapture past glories and dismiss
\ncritics with victories in India. Our evaluation from recent
\ncompetitions, is that players have problems with self-confidence
\nand motivation,\" she said.<\/p>\n
PBSI will send a team -- comprising Lidya Djaelawidjaja, Ellen
\nAngelinawaty, Yuli Marfuah and Niniek Masrikah in the singles
\ncompetition and Elysa Nathanael and Deyana Lomban; Cynthia
\nTuwankotta and Etty Tantri; and Carmelita and Indarti Issoliana
\nin the doubles -- to the Uber Cup semifinal round in India next
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has to compete in the semifinal round from Feb. 13
\nto Feb. 20 after losing to China in the 1998's final in Hong
\nKong.<\/p>\n
Many doubt Indonesia's chance to bring home the Uber Cup as
\nthe country no longer has badminton queen Susy Susanti, Mia
\nAudina and Cindana Hartono, who injured her left calf muscle last
\nweek.<\/p>\n
Elysa said: \"With this team structure, we must prove to
\nbadminton lovers that our generation can also contribute
\nsomething for the country.\"<\/p>\n
Cynthia said her victory in her first team event of the 1999
\nSoutheast Asian (SEA) Games would help her to overcome pressure
\non court.<\/p>\n
\"The Uber Cup may be harder, but my win in the Games might be
\nuseful and will motivate me to do my best,\" she said.<\/p>\n
Cynthia said her toughest rival in the competition was Ra
\nKyung-min and Chung Jae-hee of South Korea.<\/p>\n
\"Etty and I have never won against them. But this time we want
\nto narrow the record.\"<\/p>\n
PBSI training director, Christian Hadinata, said that women's
\ndoubles would have to strengthen their motivation, especially
\nwith the absence of Cindana.<\/p>\n
\"The doubles must win both matches and we hope our singles
\nplayers can steal one more point. But we are also hopeful the
\njuniors, Yuli and Niniek, can show their quality and surprise
\ntheir opponents,\" said Christian, who is also the team manager.
