        "content": "<p>Critics charged with conspiracy<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Former army general Kemal Idris, former Jakarta<br>\ngovernor Ali Sadikin and 10 other government critics would be<br>\ncharged with conspiracy, police said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>National Police Deputy Chief Lt. Gen. Nana Permana was quoted<br>\nby Antara as saying in Semarang that dossiers on three of the<br>\nalleged conspirators have been submitted to the prosecutor's<br>\noffice.<\/p>\n<p>Nana, however, said that he did not remember the names of the<br>\nthree.<\/p>\n<p>The government has slapped travel bans on Kemal, Ali,<br>\neconomist Sri Edi Swasono, (son-in-law of Indonesia founding<br>\nfather Bung Hatta) and his brother Sri Bintang Pamungkas, pending<br>\nthe results of an ongoing official investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The four are barred from leaving the country by order of a<br>\nNov. 23 decree issued by the Attorney General's Office.<\/p>\n<p>The four men, along with about a dozen others, were questioned<br>\nby police last month in the wake of the Nov. 13 Black Friday<br>\ntragedy during which troops fired at demonstrators.<\/p>\n<p>Police had said that these critics had been questioned under<br>\nArticles 107 and 110 of the Criminal Code on treason.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, they could face a maximum penalty of life<br>\nimprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>The Armed Forces has blamed these dissident leaders for<br>\ninciting the students, and accused them of plotting to topple the<br>\ngovernment of President B.J. Habibie.<\/p>\n<p>Most of those questioned were signatories of a Nov. 12<br>\ncommunique which called for the establishment of a provisional<br>\nPeople's Consultative Assembly and a presidium which would serve<br>\nas a provisional government until next year's general election.<\/p>\n<p>Bintang did not take part in the meeting which produced this<br>\ncommunique, but the government said that he had personally<br>\naddressed some of the student demonstrations, allegedly inciting<br>\nthe students.
