Critical of
\nPresident<\/p>\n
Referring to the news item in The Jakarta Post (April 26,
\n1994) concerning the arrest of a number of university students
\ncharged with humiliating the President, I have the following
\ncomments.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian state is based on the principles of the
\nPancasila democracy, and every citizen has freedom of expression.
\nThe demonstrations in which the students allegedly humiliated the
\nPresident occurred because of the absence of dialogs and openness
\nbetween the government and the students.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the students have witnessed discrepancies, either in
\nthe government body or in the society. In spite of that, the
\ngovernment remains silent and does not take action, but instead
\nit tries to put a veil on the problems. This seemingly has
\nspurred the students to take to the streets.<\/p>\n
I think it is fair for the students to criticize the
\ngovernment for the sake of a better future. It is essential to
\nknow that every state administrator, like the President, who is
\nwise and intelligent, should accept and even invite criticism
\nfrom the society.<\/p>\n
And if an official is involved in something unscrupulous, and
\nif the official has a sense of shame, the official concerned
\nshould resign from his or her post, as do officials in other
\ncountries such as Japan, the U.S., etc.<\/p>\n
