        "content": "<p>Crisis hits mental health<\/p>\n<p>ACEH: About 40 percent of 156 patients in the central mental<br>\nhospital in Banda Aceh are there as a result of the economic<br>\ncrisis, the hospital director said.<\/p>\n<p>Antara quoted Saiful Anwar as saying that most of his patients<br>\nwere facing psycho-social pressures caused by the soaring price<br>\nof basic needs, unemployment and political tension.<\/p>\n<p>\"Patients with mental disorders are usually from poor families<br>\nwith a low educational background,\" the hospital's director said.<\/p>\n<p>Anwar said that according to World Health Organization<br>\nestimates, 170,000 of the province's 3.9 million population were<br>\nlikely to be suffering from some form of light mental disorder,<br>\nincluding anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the possible impact of the nine-year military<br>\noperation during which widespread atrocities were committed, he<br>\nsaid details of the number of people affected were not available.<br>\nHowever, he said experts had encountered a number of such cases.<\/p>\n<p>He recounted one case of his in which he attributed the<br>\nparanoia suffered by his patient to the military campaign waged<br>\nagainst separatist activities in the province.
