        "content": "<p>Crisis does not affect trade<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AFP): The financial crisis in Southeast Asia has<br>\nnot yet had any impact on the region's trade, U.S. Trade<br>\nRepresentatives Charlene Barshefsky said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Barshefsky, however, raised the possibility that Asian exports<br>\nto the United States may increase because of a devaluation in<br>\nlocal currencies.<\/p>\n<p>\"There is speculation that Asian devaluations will increase<br>\nexports,\" she said. \"The impact of that could also lead to<br>\nreductions in imports.\"<\/p>\n<p>Brashefsky suggested that the countries in the region, facing<br>\na weakening economy, could instigate the currency devaluations<br>\nthemselves in order to generate more export revenue.<\/p>\n<p>According to statistics given to a congressional committee by<br>\nfederal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, U.S. products counted<br>\nfor only four percent of total imports by Thailand, the<br>\nPhilippines, Indonesia and Malaysia, the four countries at ground<br>\nzero of the Southeast Asian financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. products comprised 12 percent of the imports by Hong<br>\nKong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, the countries most<br>\nrecently impacted in the crisis.<\/p>",
