Criminal code under scrutiny<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) will hold
\na discussion on Dec. 17 about the need to revise the criminal
\ncode procedures.<\/p>\n
Experts will focus on a draft bill prepared by the foundation
\nwhich strives to curb state violence, foundation chairman Bambang
\nWidjojanto said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The foundation drafted the bill after consulting with
\nintellectuals, religious figures, politicians and legal
\nprofessionals, most of whom agreed about the need to revise the
\n15-year-old procedures.<\/p>\n
The foundation has proposed that 21 articles in the criminal
\ncode procedures be revised, Bambang said.<\/p>\n
But the draft does not address all the shortcomings in the
\ncriminal code procedures, he cautioned. Instead the legal aid
\nfoundation chose to focus on only seven key issues, including the
\nprevention of violence by the authorities.<\/p>\n
\"The politics of violence can't be wiped out even if we have
\nvery good criminal code procedures, but still, an effort to
\nminimize it should be made,\" he said. (08)<\/p>",
