Crime victims' rights<\/p>\n
Vice President Try Sutrisno has reminded us once again of the
\nneed to provide legal protection for crime victims. A public
\ndebate concerning the issue developed a few years ago, when
\ncrimes occurred with increasing frequency and brutality.
\nCriminals took not only their victim's belongings, but often
\nkilled them too. Female victims were often raped.<\/p>\n
Because of those incidents, legal experts and organizations
\nraised the need to protect crime victims. The law provides
\nprotection for criminals, as do prisons by educating inmates and
\ngiving them vocational training. Crime victims, on the other
\nhand, do not enjoy such protection. Witnesses in crimes may also
\nneed protection because they are often pursued by criminals
\ntrying to erase their tracks.<\/p>\n
Golkar's legal assistance institute held a seminar some time
\nago to discuss protection for crime victims. Lawyer RO Tambunan
\nproposed the government prepare a draft law on the issue, while
\nDr. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, a criminal law expert at the
\nUniversity of Indonesia, urged the public to set up an
\norganization to assist those victims.<\/p>\n
We believe it is indeed advisable that something be done by
\nthe public, given the rising quantity and severity of crimes.
\nThis rise in the crime rate in turn causes an increase in the
\nnumber of crime victims. Among those victims, the suffering is
\nall the more deep for those who belong to the poor and powerless.<\/p>\n
