Credit suspension affects PDR<\/p>\n
MANADO, North Sulawesi: An executive of the People's
\nSovereignty Party (PDR) here acknowledged on Wednesday the
\ncentral bank's suspension of a business credit scheme for farmers
\nhad forced it to revise its vote target in the upcoming polls.<\/p>\n
However, the party chapter's secretary, Rizal Lumiu, was quick
\nto deny the credit loans were only allocated to farmers who
\nsupported PDR.<\/p>\n
\"We just don't feel it is right to set a certain target of
\nseats in the provincial legislature, as the situation is
\ncurrently changeable,\" he told Antara, without elaborating
\nfurther.<\/p>\n
PDR is closely linked to Minister of Cooperatives and Small
\nEnterprises Adi Sasono. The party is currently facing allegations
\nof having practiced money politics by using social safety net
\nprograms.<\/p>\n
Lumiu said suspension of the credit scheme affected the
\nparty's efforts to campaign.<\/p>\n
The central bank, starting from May 17, suspended the farmer
\ncredit scheme worth Rp 3 trillion (US$375 million) for the
\n1999\/2000 planting season. The credits should have been disbursed
\nthrough village cooperatives centers (KUD) and non-KUD.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that in previous planting seasons, North
\nSulawesi farmers received Rp 266 billion under the schemes
\nchanneled through state bank BRI and private Bank Danamon. The
\namount was Rp 71 billion higher than planned.<\/p>",
