Crack down launched against illegal mining<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: The provincial administration
\nof South Kalimantan is set to crack down against mushrooming
\nillegal coal mining activities in the province by tightening
\ncontrols on local seaports, an official said.<\/p>\n
Head of the administration's coal control office Armain Janit
\nsaid the governor had instructed port authorities to check any
\nship which loads coal, starting from May 1.<\/p>\n
\"It will first be applied at Batulicin port, with other ports
\nto follow later. Mostly the mining operations take their coal
\nfrom South Kalimantan via Batulicin port,\" he said, referring to
\nthe port in Kotabaru regency, around six hours drive from
\nBanjarmasin.<\/p>\n
He disclosed that around 200,000 tons of coal per month were
\nillegally mined in several areas such as Banjar, Tanah Laut,
\nTapin, Kotabaru and Hulu Sungai. No revenue contributions were
\nmade to the local administration.<\/p>\n
In several areas, the illegal mining activities also caused
\nserious environmental damage as the miners simply excavated the
\nground and left it untreated as they moved on to other sites.
