Court stops deportation of JI suspect<\/p>\n
MALAYSIA: A Malaysian court issued a temporary order on Wednesday
\nbarring the government from deporting a suspected Jamaah
\nIslamiyah (JI) leader to his native Indonesia, the suspect's
\nlawyers said.<\/p>\n
The order blocks the government from repatriating Mohamad
\nIqbal Abdul Rahman before the High Court rules on Nov. 11 on his
\nbid to stay in Malaysia, where he has lived for years with
\npermanent residency status.<\/p>\n
The government allowed a two-year order detaining Iqbal
\nwithout trial on security grounds to expire in August, but
\ninstead of releasing him from prison authorities transferred him
\nto Immigration Department custody, canceled his Malaysian
\nresidency papers and said he would be deported.<\/p>\n
The government gave no reason for not renewing the original
\ndetention order -- though the possibility of a bureaucratic error
\nhas been raised -- or say what was delaying the deportation after
\nhis residency was revoked on Aug. 18.<\/p>\n
Indonesia has indicated Iqbal is not on authorities' wanted
\nlists there or subject to investigation for possible illegal
\nactivity.<\/p>\n
Iqbal launched legal action this week challenging the
\nwithdrawal of his Malaysian residency, arguing that the
\ngovernment had made procedural mistakes in the process and had
\ngiven no reasons for declaring him an \"undesirable immigrant.\" --
