        "content": "<p>Court stops deportation of JI suspect<\/p>\n<p>MALAYSIA: A Malaysian court issued a temporary order on Wednesday<br>\nbarring the government from deporting a suspected Jamaah<br>\nIslamiyah (JI) leader to his native Indonesia, the suspect's<br>\nlawyers said.<\/p>\n<p>The order blocks the government from repatriating Mohamad<br>\nIqbal Abdul Rahman before the High Court rules on Nov. 11 on his<br>\nbid to stay in Malaysia, where he has lived for years with<br>\npermanent residency status.<\/p>\n<p>The government allowed a two-year order detaining Iqbal<br>\nwithout trial on security grounds to expire in August, but<br>\ninstead of releasing him from prison authorities transferred him<br>\nto Immigration Department custody, canceled his Malaysian<br>\nresidency papers and said he would be deported.<\/p>\n<p>The government gave no reason for not renewing the original<br>\ndetention order -- though the possibility of a bureaucratic error<br>\nhas been raised -- or say what was delaying the deportation after<br>\nhis residency was revoked on Aug. 18.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has indicated Iqbal is not on authorities' wanted<br>\nlists there or subject to investigation for possible illegal<br>\nactivity.<\/p>\n<p>Iqbal launched legal action this week challenging the<br>\nwithdrawal of his Malaysian residency, arguing that the<br>\ngovernment had made procedural mistakes in the process and had<br>\ngiven no reasons for declaring him an \"undesirable immigrant.\" -- <br>\nAP<\/p>",
