        "content": "<p>Court rules to hear April blackout case<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court ruled yesterday<br>\nit would hear the lawsuit filed by the Indonesian Consumers<br>\nFoundation (YLKI) against the State Electricity Company (PLN) for<br>\nthe eight-hour power blackout which hit Java and Bali in April.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge K. Simanjuntak dismissed the electricity<br>\ncompany's claim that YLKI should instead sue PLN's Kramat Jati<br>\nbranch in East Jakarta, because that is where YLKI buys its<br>\nelectricity from.<\/p>\n<p>Simanjuntak ruled that PLN should be represented by its<br>\ndirectors, whose headquarters is in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>YLKI filed the class action suit in May on the grounds that<br>\nthe power blackout affected \"more than one million consumers\".<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit said the blackout occurred suddenly and without<br>\nnotice despite the fact that three days before, PLN had found<br>\nfaults at several points in the Java-Bali interconnection system.<\/p>\n<p>YLKI, being represented by the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute, is<br>\ndemanding PLN pay Rp 1,464,000 (US$542) in material and non-<br>\nmaterial damages, and Rp 664,000 each to electricity consumers<br>\naffected by the blackout on Sunday, April 13.<\/p>\n<p>YLKI is also demanding that PLN opens counters at its offices<br>\nin Java and Bali for people seeking compensation.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister of Mines and Energy, I.B. Sudjana, had said power<br>\nwas cut to repair earlier detected faults at the Gandul<br>\ntransmission I and load control station in Cinere, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday was chosen for the power cut because most factories and<br>\ncommercial offices were closed, he said.<\/p>\n<p>While repair work was underway, transmission line II<br>\noverloaded because the three electronic cards at Gandul that<br>\nprovided load protection did not work, causing the Suralaya power<br>\nstation to fail, cutting off power to most areas in Java and<br>\nBali.<\/p>\n<p>YLKI's chairwoman, Tini Hadad, said after the session the<br>\nruling showed \"the court is being fair.\"<\/p>\n<p>She said her organization would be ready with witnesses and<br>\nevidence for the trial which will start next Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>A lawyer for PLN, Muhamad Harijono, said the company's lawyers<br>\nwere also ready to face the trial.
