Court orders Lee remarks deleted<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore's High Court ordered yesterday that
\nremarks by Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew which triggered
\na bitter diplomatic row with Malaysia be stricken from a court
\ndocument. The order was issued at Lee's request in a rare court
\nappearance.<\/p>\n
\"The powers of the court must be used to maintain friendly
\nrelations between Singapore and every other country,\" Justice Lai
\nKew Chai said. \"The statements are to be deleted,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Following an uproar in Malaysia, former prime minister Lee
\napologized publicly twice for depicting a neighboring southern
\nMalaysian state, Johore, as \"notorious for shootings, muggings
\nand car-jackings.\"<\/p>\n
The remarks were contained in an affidavit filed in a
\ndefamation suit against a political opponent, Tang Liang Hong,
\nwho fled to Johore after last January's general elections in
\nSingapore.<\/p>\n
Lee spoke for almost one hour in court, stressing that he was
\ncarrying out an obligation he made to the Malaysian government.<\/p>",
