Course aims to reduce student brawls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Jakarta police precinct is to hold a
\nspecial policing course for high school students in an effort to
\nreduce the number of brawls in the city.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Abubakar Nataprawira
\nacknowledged that the course, called 'Pelajar Siaga', is adapted
\nfrom a similar course organized by the South Jakarta force.<\/p>\n
\"City Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata has instructed the
\npolice precincts in the greater Jakarta area to run the course,\"
\nAbubakar said yesterday after visiting 15 students who had been
\ndetained for brawling.<\/p>\n
He said the course, which will take up to two weeks and focus
\non improving discipline, is to be aimed at known troublemakers.<\/p>\n
\"It worked in South Jakarta. It should work here, too,
\nbecause we have the same problems,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Abubakar said the course is one of several solutions to
\nstudent brawls. Another is relocating the schools.<\/p>\n
Hamami has suggested that where there are neighboring schools,
\none should be moved to prevent the students from brawling.<\/p>\n
He expressed deep concern about the number of deaths caused by
\nbrawls among students.<\/p>\n
However, Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman
\nDjojonegoro has said that relocating schools will not stop
\nstudents from brawling.<\/p>\n
According to Wardiman a shortage of public transportation
\nvehicles has been the main reason for student brawls.<\/p>\n
Three students died in separate brawls, in West Jakarta,
\nCentral Jakarta and North Jakarta, earlier this month.<\/p>\n
At least 12 students have died in brawls in the city over the
