Counterfeit money widespread<\/p>\n
BOGOR (JP): Counterfeit money has become widespread here since
\nthe monetary crisis took root last year, a reliable source at the
\nlocal district court said yesterday.<\/p>\n
The court has handled eight cases related to counterfeiting
\ninvolving 18 suspects over the last six months, the source, who
\nspoke on condition of anonymity, said.<\/p>\n
Last year, the court only tried two such cases.<\/p>\n
\"If a small city like Bogor has such a big counterfeiting
\nproblem, you can imagine how much counterfeit money is
\ncirculating in major cities like Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan and
\nDenpasar.\"<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the court sentenced seven people to between one
\nyear and two years in prison for circulating bogus money. They
\nwere arrested while in possession of 606 Rp 20,000 banknotes.<\/p>\n
The defendants accepted the sentence but prosecutor Razali
\nHanafiah, who had sought four years imprisonment for each,
\nbelieved it was \"too light\" and has appealed the decision.<\/p>\n
Separately, Widodo, an employer of a Jakarta-based cigarette
\ncompany, reported that the amount of counterfeit money his firm
\nhad received was on the rise.<\/p>\n
\"We identify an average of Rp 100,000 in counterfeit banknotes
\nevery week,\" he said. (24)<\/p>",
