Councilors on trip to Berlin<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Nine members of the City Council's Commission D
\nfor development affairs are on a four-day study trip to Berlin,
\nGermany.<\/p>\n
Head of the commission, Lukman F. Mokoginta, said their
\nobservations specifically include public transport, city
\neconomics and drinking water management.<\/p>\n
\"The visit is a follow-up to a sister city agreement between
\nJakarta and Berlin on April 13, 1994,\" Lukman said in a quote by
\nAntara new agency on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Paris and London are also on the councilors' itinerary.<\/p>\n
Lukman said what was interesting was how people of the former
\ntwo Germanys were being united by \"loving\" their capital. Berlin,
\nformerly divided into West and East Berlin, is now the capital of
\nthe Federal Republic of Germany.<\/p>\n
He said the unification of the city involved bringing together
\ndifferent social groups and differences in city management such
\nas in housing, transportation, drinking water and waste
\nmanagement.<\/p>\n
\"Efforts in overcoming undesired results of the union of the
\ntwo Berlins...could be comparative material in building Jakarta,\"
\nAntara reported.<\/p>\n
Jakarta's community also has a wide diversity in culture,
\nLukman said.<\/p>\n
\"We also have vulnerable areas that need the right approach to
\nunify our community,\" Lukman was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n
Councilors have also been scheduled to visit an ongoing
\nexhibition of Berlin in the year 2000. (anr)<\/p>",
