Councilors nabbed for gambling<\/p>\n

Police personnel on Thursday night arrested the speaker of the
\nSukoharjo regental council, Wardoyo Wijaya, and fellow
\ncouncillor, Parjiyo, on charges of gambling in a hotel in
\nSurakarta, Central Java.<\/p>\n
Besides arresting the two councillors from the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the police also nabbed
\npolice officer Adj. Chief. Brig. Mulyadi and four civilians
\nParwanto Mulyo, Jack Susongko, Suyatno and Anastoko Triwahyono.<\/p>\n
From them, police personnel seized gambling cards, cash to the
\nvalue of Rp 707,000 (US$72) and two cars.<\/p>\n
Chief of Surakarta police Sr. Comr. Abdul Madjid said that
\nfollowing the arrest, the police would produce the case file as
\nsoon as possible and it would be handed over to prosecutors for
\nfollow-up. "There will be no exceptions for them, all are equal
\nbefore the law. They should have been role models for people, but
\nthey failed to be that," said Abdul Madjid.<\/p>\n
Sukoharjo is located near Surakarta, a major city in Central
\nJava.<\/p>\n
The arrest of a councillor was not the first in Surakarta.
\nLast week, Surakarta police personnel also arrested Nur Sanyoto,
\na councillor in Karanganyar regency near Surakarta, for
\npossession of drugs along with his wife.<\/p>\n
Separately, Wardoyo denied that they played gambling.<\/p>\n
"We were gambling for fun, it was not serious gambling. I
\ndon't understand why I was arrested by the police personnel,"
\nsaid Wardoyo, quoted by Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
Seven people have been named suspects, and if convicted, they
\ncould serve a maximum five years in jail.<\/p>\n
The arrests came only weeks after chief of National Police
\nGen. Sutanto declared a nationwide crackdown against gambling.<\/p>",
