Councilor warns hospitals about waste plant deadline<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A city councilor is warning city hospitals of
\nthe punitive actions ahead if they fail to meet the October
\ndeadline set by the municipal administration to build waste water
\ntreatment plants.<\/p>\n
\"Because the government has already extended the deadline for
\na year there will be no excuse for them not to install the
\nplants,\" Councilor Muhamad Rodja of the United Development Party
\n(PPP) faction said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The governor's office also has extended the deadline for
\nhospitals in the city to install incinerators to destroy their
\nwaste for a year until October.<\/p>\n
Hence, according to Rodja, city hospitals should effectively
\nuse the time left to build water treatment plants and to install
\nincinerators.<\/p>\n
\"I will recommend that the government take punitive action
\nagainst hospitals which fail to meet the deadline,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Most city hospitals have delayed the installation of waste
\ntreatment facilities on the basis that they cannot afford to do
\nso. They say it is too expensive for them to buy incinerators,
\nwhich are valued at Rp 2 billion (US$ 933,706) each.<\/p>\n
\"I think the excuse is unacceptable since domestic firms
\nproduce and sell incinerators at a lower price,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Rodja said he was especially concerned with the issue and was
\ngiving it top priority because hospital waste is more dangerous
\nthan that dumped by hotels and most industries. \"We are also
\nconcerned over waste from other facilities, but we prioritize
\nhospitals because their waste is very dangerous.\"<\/p>\n
Rodja said his commission plans to visit city hospitals to
\ninspect their waste water treatment plants in the near future.<\/p>\n
He said that among the major \"waste-producer\" medical centers
\nhere are the state-owned Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in
\nCentral Jakarta, the privately-owned Saint Carolus in Salemba,
\nCentral Jakarta, the privately-owned Cikini Hospital on Raden
\nSaleh in Central Jakarta, the privately-owned Husada Hospital in
\nWest Jakarta and army-owned Gatot Subroto Hospital in Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
A report said almost all the hospitals in the city simply dump
\ntheir untreated waste into rivers.<\/p>\n
Among the waterways most polluted by hospitals are the
\nCiliwung and Mookervart rivers.<\/p>\n
The authorities have long carried out a special environmental
\nprogram called Prokasih or the Clean River Program, which focuses
\non cleaning up the rivers in the capital. (05)<\/p>",
