Councilor wants fair decision on Ancol scam<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): On the eve of Governor Sutiyoso's announcement
\nconcerning the alleged misused of funds involving PT Pembangunan
\nJaya Ancol (PJA), City Council deputy speaker Djafar Badjeber
\ndemanded a fair and honest decision on the matter.<\/p>\n
Djafar Badjeber suggested that the governor cross-check all
\nreports presented by the City Inspectorate and the Officials
\nHonor Council in order to avoid hidden interests of certain
\nparties.<\/p>\n
\"Sutiyoso must be clear in declaring the truth and properly
\npunishing the guilty officials,\" Djafar said.<\/p>\n
He was responding to speculation that the council would
\nsacrifice low-ranking staffers as scapegoats to cover any top
\ncity officials involved in the scam.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso revealed on Friday that PT Pembangunan Jaya
\nAncol was proven guilty of disbursing Rp 2.1 billion (US$220,000)
\nto finance overseas trips of councilors and city officials
\nwithout his consent.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Prosecutor's Office and the honor council, which
\ncomprises all top officials in the city administration, are
\nscrutinizing 40 people, including 14 councilors, in connection
\nwith the case.<\/p>\n
Among the city officials suspected of involvement in the case
\nare chief of City Development Agency Bambang Sungkono, City Land
\nAgency chief Ahmaddin Ahmad and his deputy Nurfakih.<\/p>\n
A source at the City Inspectorate confirmed on Monday that at
\nleast four administration staffers at the City Council
\nSecretariat who went on the overseas trips were proven to have
\nreceived a double allowance each.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso, who is also the ex officio president commissioner of
\nPT PJA, said on Friday he would not hesitate to fire Bambang or
\nanyone else proven guilty in the scam.<\/p>\n
Separately, representatives of Ancol's workers union protested
\nthe governor for blaming the partly city-owned company while the
\ninvestigation into the case was still under way.<\/p>\n
They said it was the governor who approved the company's
\nproposal to fund the overseas trips.<\/p>\n
\"We will stage a mass rally if the governor dismisses Ancol's
\ndirector Rushadi for such a baseless accusation,\" said chief of
\nthe union, Harry Susanto, who is also an advertising manager at
\nthe Ancol leisure complex developer.<\/p>\n
\"We believe that Rushadi is an honest man. He must have
\nconsulted with the governor over the proposal beforehand,\" said
\nHarry.<\/p>\n
He suspected that there were certain people who wished to take
\nadvantage of Rushadi's departure from the company. Rifts have
\nlong been apparent among the firm's four directors, Harry said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso asserted on Monday that he never approved the
\nproposal.<\/p>\n
The Ancol scam centers around allegations that PT PJA paid Rp
\n2.1 billion to fund overseas trips called \"comparison studies\"
\nfor a group of 45 people comprising councilors and city officials
\nbetween Oct. 9 and Oct. 15. to three destinations -- South
