Councilor deplores prostitution<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A councilor said the administration should act
\nfirmly against prostitutes operating outside Kramat Tunggak, the
\nonly red-light district recognized by the city administration,
\nwith particular reference to those working at the Jatinegara
\nrailway station in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Amier Armas said the women, aged between 16 and 40, seemed to
\nbe \"protected\", given that they appeared to freely operate around
\nthe station's platform, food stalls and book stores.<\/p>\n
\"When I last checked a few months ago, there were around 100
\nprostitutes,\" Amier, a member of the commission E in charge of
\npublic welfare, said.<\/p>\n
\"Now there are around 150,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"If there are any officials protecting them, whether they be
\nsecurity officials or those from the (state-owned) railway
\ncompany, Perumka, we demand that firm action be taken against
\nthem,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The single city-recognized complex for prostitutes is in
\nKramat Tunggak in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n
In response to whether the council could help facilitate safe
\nsex education for the prostitutes, Amier said the commission is
\npresently more concerned about the welfare of train passengers.<\/p>\n
\"People returning home from work and housewives told us they
\nfelt disturbed by the prostitutes' presence,\" Amier said.<\/p>\n
\"Decent housewives also become prey to men's leers at the
\nstation because the men think they are prostitutes,\" he added.
