Councillors want probe into medicines<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Councillors in Padang, West Sumatra, are
\ndemanding a probe into the illegal sale of medicines due to be
\ngiven out freely by the government to needy families.<\/p>\n
\"Those medicines should be for the poor, but instead we find
\nthem being sold on the shelves of pharmacies,\" councillor
\nMarhaeni was quoted by Antara as saying in Padang on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Marhaeni, who sits on Commission E in charge of social
\nwelfare, lamented that there was a clear lack of concern about
\nthe matter from all sides, especially since the medication was
\nstill stamped with the notice: \"Free Medicine for Pre-Prosperous
\nFamilies.\"<\/p>\n
Poor families who really needed the medicine were being forced
\nto pay for it while somebody else out there was making a profit,
\nshe added.<\/p>\n
She said such practices also reflected the poor state of
\nhealth care in the province.<\/p>\n
\"We should realize that our area has become a national
\nspectacle in terms of health because of the high number of people
\nsuffering from contagious diseases such as rabies, tuberculosis
\nand malaria,\" she added.<\/p>\n
Marhaeni called on offices in the provincial administration to
\nmake a concerted effort to resolve any differences they had to
\nprovide a better service and build infrastructures in the area of
\nhealth.<\/p>\n
\"Let build and make things better. I don't want to see the
\ninstitutions who are supposed to be responsible for eradicating
\ndisease instead fighting with each other.\"(mds)<\/p>",
