Councillors to get small rewards<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: Makassar municipality legislative
\ncouncil will not give large severance packages to councillors
\nwhose terms end this year.<\/p>\n
"Only a small amount will be awarded from the miscellaneous
\nbudget," said Suleman bin Darri, a committee member of the
\nhousehold budget at the legislature on Friday.<\/p>\n
Suleman said council members would receive small payments as a
\ntoken of appreciation from the Makassar municipality because they
\nhad contributed to developing the city of Makassar over a five-
\nyear period.<\/p>\n
However, he refused to specify the amount to be paid to the
\ncouncillors, explaining that the 2004 budget had not been fully
\ndiscussed.<\/p>\n
Andi Erna Noer, a budget committee member from Commission E,
\nadmitted that after her 1997-1999 term in office she had received
\na payment and she expected to receive another this year.<\/p>\n
End-of-term payments have been a common trend for regional
\nlegislatures for years. During the New Order era, the practice
