Councillors off on foreign trip<\/p>\n
PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: The provincial legislature here has
\nclosed up shop for the time being, with all of the councillors
\nhaving left the building.<\/p>\n
The legislature has been left vacant since Wednesday, when 73
\ncouncillors departed in separate groups for Thailand, Singapore
\nand Malaysia. Two other councillors are traveling to Semarang and
\nSurabaya.<\/p>\n
The trips are described as comparative studies, and were met
\nwith criticism.<\/p>\n
\"Why did they leave this building empty?\" Rudi, who came to
\nfile a complaint, muttered.<\/p>\n
M. Suharni, a researcher from the Institute of Public Policy
\nStudy and People Participation, called the trips a waste of time,
\nenergy and money.<\/p>\n
\"The comparative studies will mean nothing to the effort to
\nimprove the legislature's performance. It is a kind of mission
\nimpossible, because they cannot find any valuable information in
\nsuch a short time. Moreover, they will face language barriers
\nduring their overseas trips,\" said Suharni.<\/p>\n
Considering the protracted economic turmoil, the trips serve
\nas evidence that the councillors lack a sense of crisis, he
