Councillor beats journalist<\/p>\n
TEGAL, Central Java: Hardjo Rasdi, a senior legislator in the
\nCentral Java town of Tegal, has come under fire for attacking a
\nlocal journalist who covered his alleged love affair with a
\nuniversity student.<\/p>\n
Nur Ikhsan, a 27-year-old reporter for the Kriminal (crime)
\nweekly tabloid, was treated at a local hospital for injuries
\ncaused by the beating, which took place on Friday.<\/p>\n
The victim reported the episode to the local police and the
\nTegal branch of the Indonesian Journalists' Association (PWI).
\nPWI members condemned the attack, and demanded that police take
\nfirm action against Hardjo.<\/p>\n
Hardjo, commission D chairman of the Tegal legislative
\ncouncil, was reportedly incensed by an article by Ikhsan on the
\nlegislator's affair with a female student.<\/p>\n
The story identified the woman only as Yun, and said that the
\nliaison took place at a hotel in Purwokerto regency, where the
\nunmarried couple reportedly stayed for three days.<\/p>\n
He invited Ikhsan to come to his working room, where the
\nlegislator slapped his face, and threatened to kill him.<\/p>\n
\"I told Pak Hardjo that what was published in my tabloid was
\nbased on facts and confirmations -- including himself. Still, he
\nthreatened to finish me off,\" Ikhsan said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Yun's mother, a relative of Hardjo's wife, also reported the
\ncase to the local police, demanding that the legislator be held
