Council wants prices stabilized<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city council wants the price of food staples
\nstabilized in anticipation of the Christmas and New Year's
\ncelebrations.<\/p>\n
Hasan Dasy, of the city council's commission for economic
\naffairs, said yesterday that city councilors, the Regional
\nEconomy Development Office, the City Logistics Agency, the Animal
\nHusbandry Office and city-owned PT Food Station Cipinang must
\ncoordinate their plans.<\/p>\n
\"Anticipation is a must. An increase in the nine staple
\nsupplies could create unrest,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The nine staples are rice, sugar, meat, flour and oil.<\/p>\n
The price of rice and other basics tends to rise before
\nChristmas, New Years and Idul Fitri, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Traders unreasonably increase their prices to make a quick
\nprofit,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He urged the offices to monitor the price of staples in the
\ncity's markets.<\/p>\n
He said the offices must immediately discipline traders who
\nuse the holidays to make unjustifiable profits.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Wiryomartono, the president of PT Food Station
\nCipinang, which manages the Cipinang Rice Market in East Jakarta,
\nsaid yesterday that the operation isn't necessary because there
\nis no serious problem.<\/p>\n
He said the price of rice returned to the state logistics
\nagency's standard after a slight increase in the first week of
\nthis month.<\/p>\n
He said the agency sets the price of rice at between Rp 890
\n(US 38 cents) and Rp 950 a kilogram.(32)<\/p>",
