Council not informed about barter accord<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City councilors expressed concern yesterday over
\nthe city administration's decision to approve an agreement for
\nthe barter of a city-owned gymnastics hall in Central Jakarta
\nwithout first consulting with the council.<\/p>\n
The barter deal was uncovered only yesterday, during a visit
\nby a group of councilors to a number of city-owned sports
\nfacilities in Central and East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Yudi Suyoto, an official of the City Sports Office, revealed
\nthat the city administration has approved a plan to hand over the
\ngymnastics hall, on Jl. Kampung Lima Dalam, to a private company.<\/p>\n
In exchange, the company is to build a new, international-
\nstandard gymnastics hall on a 7,557-square-meter plot of land on
\nJl. Raden Intan in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The company plans to use the Jl. Kampung Lima Dalam site for
\nthe construction of a business center, Yudi said.<\/p>\n
\"I do not know the developer's name,\" Yudi replied to an
\ninquiry by the council's Siti Maryam Achmad. Siti is a member of
\ncommission E, which is responsible for public welfare.<\/p>\n
Ronggo Sutrisno Tahir, the commission's deputy chairman, said
\nhe had never heard of the plan.<\/p>\n
\"I know nothing about the plan, please ask the city
\nofficials,\" he said in response to reporters' questions.<\/p>\n
Ary Amier Armas, another member of commission E, said that the
\ncity administration has disappointed the City Council by its
\nfailure to provide the latter with adequate information.<\/p>\n
\"We need more information as input for the city development
\nprograms,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Ary also criticized the failure of the head of the city sports
\noffice, Edy Widodo, to accompany the council group on its tour of
\nthe city's sports facilities.<\/p>\n
According to Councilor Djenny Suharso, a member of commission
\nA -- which is in charge of administration, security and public
\norder -- all barter agreements involving city-owned properties
\nmust be approved by the council.<\/p>\n
The existing gymnastics hall, which occupies an area of 2,900
\nsq. meters, is being used to train Jakarta gymnasts in the lead-
\nup to the next National Games, PON XIV. The games are to be held
\nhere in September next year.<\/p>\n
Nineteen gymnasts are undergoing training in the hall,
\naccording to trainer T.J. Purba, who added that he hoped the
\nbarter deal would not disturb their training programs.<\/p>\n
He said that the hall is also used by pupils of nearby
\nschools.<\/p>\n
Yudi said that the new gymnastics hall is expected to be
\ncompleted before next year's games. (32)<\/p>",
