        "content": "<p>Moscow (ANTARA) - European Council President Antonio Costa stated\nthat European leaders should continue efforts to maintain relations with\nthe United States, even as President Donald Trump frequently issues\nharsh rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must strive to preserve what we have [with the US]\u2026 and we work\nhard to remain calm and maintain the established relations,\u201d Costa said\nat an event in Italy on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Financial Times report, Costa identified the European\nUnion\u2019s current priorities as maintaining trade stability, preserving\ncooperation in NATO, and ensuring all parties remain engaged.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Trump\u2019s criticisms of the European Union, Costa said\nEurope is not very active in responding via social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were born in the 1950s. We are not very good at playing social\nmedia. We choose not to respond to every post,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, on 1 May, Trump announced plans to raise tariffs on\nimported cars and trucks from the European Union to 25 per cent, citing\nthe bloc\u2019s failure to meet trade commitments to the US.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Trump said he had spoken with European Commission\nPresident Ursula von der Leyen and agreed to give the European Union\nuntil 4 July to implement part of the trade deal.<\/p>\n<p>Trump warned that Washington would impose \u201cmuch higher\u201d tariffs if\nthe deal is not fulfilled.<\/p>",
