'Corruptors also deserve death sentence'<\/p>\n
The execution of Indian national Ayodhya Prasadh Chaubey, 67,
\nlast week in Medan, North Sumatra, for drug smuggling has caused
\ndebate about capital punishment. The Jakarta Post asked residents
\nfor their opinion on the issue.<\/p>\n
Anwar, 35, works for a company in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta.

I support the death sentence for drug traffickers because what
\nthey do causes serious problems for many people. Just imagine if
\nyour child was one of their victims. You would be very sad.<\/p>\n
But I often hear that many police officers are willing to free
\ndrug suspects for a bribe. If that is the case, top police
\nofficers must stop this practice.<\/p>\n
Corruptors also deserve the death sentence, but only those who
\nsteal large amounts of money. Such tough action will deter other
\npeople from engaging in corruption.<\/p>\n

I think the death sentence is inhumane. Governments around the
\nworld should stop imposing capital punishment.<\/p>\n
I acknowledge that drug dealers do not care whether they hook
\nyoung people, even children, on drugs. And in many cases, drug
\naddiction leads to death. Therefore, drug dealers should be
\nseverely punished. But still, for me, the death sentence is too
\ncold-blooded, too unfeeling.<\/p>\n
I cannot imagine what Chaubey was feeling as he was standing
\nin front of the firing squad.<\/p>\n
