Corruption must be halted<\/p>\n
We have to admit that Indonesia is now in a very difficult
\neconomic situation. We also have to admit that this situation has
\nbeen mostly caused by corruption.<\/p>\n
So to improve the situation, we must fight corruption. But
\nhow?<\/p>\n
At the higher level of bureaucracy, one practices corruption
\nto enrich oneself. At lower levels, it becomes a way of life as
\nthe salaries of employees are insufficient to live on, so they
\nresort to corruption for survival.<\/p>\n
During president Sukarno's reign people also suffered because
\nthere was little food and clothing, and jobs were scarce.
\nHowever, Dewi, one of Sukarno's wives, could be counted as one of
\nthe richest women in the world. Needless to say that the largest
\nchunk of her wealth, if not all, came from Indonesia. While pain,
\nsuffering, hunger and other miseries prevailed among the common
\npeople, there were groups of people who would enrich themselves.<\/p>\n
During president Soeharto's era, we witnessed a lot of
\nimprovement as far as the people's welfare was concerned,
\nalthough much still could be done and changes made for the
\nbetter.<\/p>\n
The unfortunate thing now is that our foreign debt is piling
\nup. Even unborn babies have been burdened with loans that they
\nwill have to pay back.<\/p>\n
After 53 years in self-government (with many wrongdoings, I am
\nafraid) we should make great efforts to find the best solution to
\nthe ailing economy and lighten the people's suffering.<\/p>\n
