MEDAN, North Sumatra: A senior lawyer here, Prof. Anni Abbas
\nManopo, called for the punishment of officials who protected
\nfactory owners or employers who violated labor rules such as the
\nminimum wage.<\/p>\n
\"I think it would have been impossible for manpower officials
\nnot to have known of the violations of labor regulations by many
\nemployers,\" she told Antara.<\/p>\n
She added that the industrial firms would not have dared
\nviolate the minimum wage limit if they did not possess the
\n\"backing\" of government officials.<\/p>\n
In her opinion, it was these officials who triggered the
\ncurrent labor unrest in North Sumatra.<\/p>\n
According to Manopo, who holds the distinction of being the
\ncountry's first woman lawyer, she has received reports indicating
\nthat local businessmen spend between 10 to 30 percent of their
\nnet profits each month to bribe government officials.<\/p>\n
This kind of corruption has gone on too long and is no longer
\na secret. It is no wonder then that the issue of labor welfare
\ncannot be dealt with satisfactorily, she said.(07)<\/p>\n
W. Kalimantan gets
\nnew police chief<\/p>\n
PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Col. Zakaria Rabuddin was inducted
\non Wednesday as West Kalimantan's new Chief of Police, replacing
\nCol. I Ketut Astawa.<\/p>\n
The commencement ceremony was conducted by the Deputy Chief of
\nOperations of the Indonesian Police Maj. Gen. Koesparmono on
\nbehalf of National Police Chief Gen. Banurusman.<\/p>\n
In a written speech, Banurusman called for closer cooperation
\nand mutual support among all the divisions to improve the level
\nof prosperity and security.<\/p>\n
\"The improvement of welfare will increase society's potency in
\nfighting any menacing threats towards security,\" he as quoted by

JAKARTA: Megawati Soekarnoputri, the head of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party (PDI), along with 14 other prominent women will
\nreceive the Kartini trophy from the Jakarta Foundation in
\nrecognition their many accomplishments in the commercial and
\nsocial fields.<\/p>\n
The 1994 Kartini trophy will be awarded during a Charity Grand
\nGala Dinner on Saturday as part of the second Women's
\nAchievements Awards.<\/p>\n
Included among this year's distinguished list of recipients is
\nbadminton superstar Susi Susanti, fashion designer Ghea Sukarya
\nand traditional cosmetics entrepreneur Mooryati Soedibyo.<\/p>\n
