Corruption and the 2004 elections<\/p>\n

I am very concerned by a statement made by the coordinator of
\nthe Indonesian Corruption Watch, Teten Marzuki, in a number of
\ndailies on March 19.<\/p>\n
Teten said political corruption was expected to increase ahead
\nof the 2004 general election.<\/p>\n
He said this corruption would be triggered by economically
\nmotivated politicians raising money by hook or by crook to help
\ntheir parties win the elections.<\/p>\n
If Teten's prediction comes to pass, we can expect even worse
\ndays ahead for the country. Before even being elected we would
\nsee that these politicians are already prepared to cheat the
\npeople. It is easy to predict that the situation would get even
\nworse if one of these politicians was to become president.<\/p>\n
Despite the fact that many of our representatives claim to be
\nhonest, intelligent, civilized and religious, they do not act as
\nsuch. The House of Representatives and the People's Consultative
\nAssembly are not places for making money; they are for those who
\nreally wish to fight for the interests of the people, not for
\npersonal or political interests.<\/p>\n
I hope Teten's statement will help us realize that we must
\ncreate a clean government and ensure the next elections run
\nsmoothly.<\/p>\n
