Corruption and democracy<\/p>\n

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono declared Dec. 9
\nAnticorruption Day for the purpose of waging a war against
\ncorruption. On several occasions he even said he would direct the
\ncorruption eradication movement himself.<\/p>\n
Indonesia belongs to the group of most corrupt countries,
\noccupying top place on Transparency International's corruption
\nlist. This has been due to the lack of serious attempts to fight
\ncorruption, with no punishments imposed in major cases.<\/p>\n
Former deputy prime minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim has
\ncommented that Indonesia should be proud of its democracy because
\nthe nation no longer has a culture of fear. Indonesians now enjoy
\npress, judicial, economic and even religious freedom.<\/p>\n
Freedom is far more significant than economic progress,
\nbecause through freedom and democracy, Indonesia has the
\nopportunity to achieve greater economic advancement. But
\ndemocracy demands responsibility.<\/p>\n
The law must be respected, otherwise corruption, collusion and
\nnepotism will continue to plague this nation, and the opportunity
\nfor advancement will be lost.<\/p>\n
This reminder from the nation's neighbor should be heeded and
\nthe momentum to properly enforce the law utilized. The failure to
\ndo so would not only cause the loss of public confidence but also
\nusher in the law of the jungle.<\/p>\n
