Corrupt bureaucrates attacked<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A senior official at the Ministry of Home
\nAffairs renewed his attack yesterday against fellow officials for
\ntaking bribes from prospective employees.<\/p>\n
"There have been cases recently where the recruitment of
\nMinistry of Home Affairs employees was done in ways which were
\nnot objective," according to the ministry's secretary-general
\nSuryatna Subrata yesterday. "They were recruited in a corrupt
\nmanner."<\/p>\n
Addressing a monthly gathering of employees at the ministry,
\nSuryatna said such corrupt practices would adversely influence
\nthe employees' performance.<\/p>\n
This is the second time Suryatna has revealed corruption in
\nhis office. In Bali last week, he admitted that some civil
\nservants in all ministries had not been recruited in an objective
\nand fair manner, and that some job applicants had bribed
\nofficials.<\/p>\n
"The practice is common in every region of the country," he
\nsaid then, adding that bribery was only one of several corrupt
\npractices. He identified nepotism as another practice that
\nadversely influenced the quality of Indonesia's human resources.<\/p>\n
He said the ministry had imposed administrative sanctions on
\nofficials found guilty of violating the established procedure for
\ncivil servants' recruitment.<\/p>\n
He cited that some officials at several Central Java offices
\nhad either been reprimanded, demoted or even fired.<\/p>\n
He blamed the rampant corruption on the weak supervisory
\nsystem, but promised to make improvements.<\/p>\n
Vice President Try Sutrisno opened a gathering of officials
\nyesterday to discuss administrative reform. He stressed to the
\naudience the importance of an efficient organization for the sake
\nof improved regional autonomy.<\/p>\n
"Regional autonomy needs appropriate organizational support so
\nthe state apparatus can effectively and efficiently run the
\ncountry," he said.<\/p>\n
Try maintained that regional autonomy was one of the best ways
