Corby controversy II<\/p>\n
While the public's sympathy is understandable, it is on the
\nfacts that the court has had to make its judgment. The legal
\nprocess in Bali was unfamiliar and may have appeared even
\nchaotic, given the free media access to the courtroom. However,
\nthat does not mean the Chief Justice, Linton Sirait, presides
\nover a kangaroo court without proper legal process.<\/p>\n
Yet long before the sentence was handed down many concerned
\nAustralians had elevated Schappelle Corby to martyr status. But a
\nmartyr to what cause? There are 155 Australians in foreign jails
\non drugs charges, two facing the death penalty.<\/p>\n
It is utterly dismaying that some of Corby's supporters
\nresorted to blatantly racist slurs, discrediting the verdict in
\nadvance by demeaning the judges on racial grounds and, in some
\ncase, vilifying all Indonesians.<\/p>\n
An immediate appeal is expected, and Indonesia is cooperating
\nfully on a prisoner exchange treaty which is likely to bring
\nCorby home. Such treaties go a long way to easing tensions
\nbecause Australians are spared imprisonment below standards
\naccepted by the community.<\/p>\n
A special \"one-off\" Corby deal, however, would be
\ninappropriate. All Australians must be treated equally. This
\nincludes the two young Australians on death row in Vietnam and
\nSingapore.
