Coral reefs in Maluku in danger<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku: Ecologists have expressed their concern over
\nthe rapid devastation of Ambon Bay's coral reefs due to dockyard
\nestablishment and industrial waste.<\/p>\n
A researcher from the National Institute of Sciences'
\nOceanology Research and Development Center, Heryanto, said the
\nconstruction of the dockyard at Silale village beach, was
\nthreatening the sustainability of coral reefs which have been a
\ncentral object of tourism for years.<\/p>\n
Another coral reef expert, Fredy Leatemia, said the land
\nclearing for settlements and farming and industrial development
\nalso posed a major threat.<\/p>\n
The industrial and domestic waste being dumped into the sea is
\nextremely hazardous to various oceanic life which is a source of
\nsurvival for the coral reefs.<\/p>\n
"We are concerned about the situation as it threatens the
\nbeautiful scenery of Ambon Bay's underwater life that is admired
\nby tourists," Fredy told Antara yesterday. (09)<\/p>",
