\nMahendra says regulations pertaining to intellectual property
\nrights of industrial design is aimed at effectively protecting a
\nproduct from being copied.<\/p>\n
Yusril also said on Monday that the regulation was part of
\nIndonesia's commitment to upholding the Agreement on Trade
\nRelated Aspect Of Intellectual Property Right by the World Trade
\nOrganization (WTO).<\/p>\n
The minister said the commitment had been translated into Law
\nNo. 31\/2000 on the protection of industrial design.<\/p>\n
Indonesia ranks third after China and Vietnam in piracy.<\/p>\n
A recent report by the Business Software Alliance showed that
\nsoftware developers suffered losses of US$80 million in 2001
\nbecause of pirated software.<\/p>\n
After one year of campaigning, Law No. 19\/2002 on copyright

JAKARTA: The National Police has started issuing the letter of
\ncriminal record (SKCK) to replace the letter on good behavior
\n(SKKB).<\/p>\n
Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Zainuri Lubis said on Monday that
\nthe implementation of SKCK began early this month.<\/p>\n
The SKCK could be used as reference in employment and other
\nofficial needs, he said, and that the letter would carry an
\nindividual's criminal record.<\/p>\n
The procedure to request an SKCK is similar to that of

JAKARTA: Vice President Hamzah Haz stressed on Monday that
\nnext year's general elections were a test case for the reform
\nmovement, and should not be allowed to fail.<\/p>\n
\"We should make the general elections a success,\" he said in
\nhis address at the opening of this year's coordination meeting
\nfor national development at the Bidakara building.<\/p>\n
Hamzah underscored the fundamental nature of next year's
\ngeneral elections, in which the people would directly elect
\nmembers of legislative bodies, as well as their president and
\nvice president.<\/p>\n
\"As such, the general elections will be a test case for all of
\nus (Indonesians). Should it fail to improve the people's lot, it
\nwould amount to a failure to fulfill the objectives of reform,\"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The vice president also noted that the general elections would
\nspend a staggering amount of the people's money.<\/p>\n
\"So, a failure in the general elections would also result in a

JAKARTA: Former president Soeharto is still too ill to face
\ntrial on corruption charges involving hundreds of millions of
\ndollars, Attorney General M.A. Rachman said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"We have obtained a second opinion, conducted medical
\nexaminations by other doctors and the results remain the same ...
\ntherefore, the trial cannot proceed as long as his health does
\nnot improved,\" Rachman said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, 82, was accused of embezzling US$571 million in
\nstate funds during his 32-year rule, which ended in May 1998,
\nwhen he stepped down under the great pressure of the reform
\nmovement.<\/p>\n
His trial, however, has been postponed indefinitely on the
\ngrounds of his poor health.<\/p>\n
Soeharto, who has suffered several minor strokes and other
\nhealth problems, has largely stayed at his home in the upmarket
\nJakarta suburb of Menteng since stepping down.<\/p>\n
Among his rare trips was a visit to his wife's grave in Solo,
\nCentral Java, last year and a brief visit in May to his son
\nTommy, who is serving a 15-year jail sentence for murder at an
\nisland prison.<\/p>\n
Soeharto's family and associates amassed billions of dollars
\nthrough lucrative monopolies or outright corruption during his
\nrule.<\/p>\n
A 1999 investigation by Time magazine found that he and his
\nsix children still had assets at that time conservatively
