Cops probed over illegal logging<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Four middle-ranking officers of the Papua Police are
\nbeing investigated for their alleged roles in supporting illegal
\nlogging activities in the province.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the National Police Insp. Gen. Aryanto
\nBoedihardjo said on Wednesday the officers allegedly took bribes
\nfrom several financial backers in Papua to help facilitate their
\nillegal logging activities.<\/p>\n
The police personnel have been identified as Sr. Comr. STM,
\nSr. Comr. SLM, Comr. MR and Adj. Sr. Comr. ED.<\/p>\n
\"With the help of the central bank, we're currently examining
\ntheir bank accounts to check whether there are any suspicious
\ntransfers to the accounts,\" Aryanto said.<\/p>\n
Police have arrested 69 suspects -- nine of whom are Malaysian
\nnationals -- and seized 326,058 cubic meters of logs and 7,235
\ncubic meters of processed timber along with 727 units of heavy
\nweight equipment, four barges and eight tugboats during their
\nanti-illegal logging operation in Papua. -- JP<\/p>",
