Cop with bad record made chief<\/p>\n

Former West Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Bambang Wasgito was
\ninstalled as the Bogor Police chief on Tuesday, replacing Sr.
\nComr. Anton Bachrul Alam who had been in office for 14 months, in
\na ceremony led by West Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Dadang
\nGarnida.<\/p>\n
Anton, formerly Jakarta Police spokesman, was appointed head
\nof the Bali Police's internal affairs division.<\/p>\n
Before being installed as Bogor Police chief, Bambang served
\nat the National Police transnational crime division since last
\nAugust. His promotion occurred after an extortion allegation had
\nbeen leveled against him.<\/p>\n
His new position has been questioned by Police Watch.<\/p>\n
\"The public knows that Bambang has a bad record. I think his
\ninstallment will have a negative impact on the police's attempt
\nto improve their image,\" said Rashid Lubis, chairman of Police
\nWatch. \"It proves collusion still exists within the police.\"<\/p>\n
In mid last year, Bambang was accused of extorting money from
\nseveral traditional Chinese medicine vendors. The National Police
\nalso received copies of receipts suggesting that Bambang and some
\nof his subordinates had received millions of rupiah from managers
\nof gambling and entertainment dens in Glodok, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The receipts revealed, among other things, that Bambang had
\nspent Rp 60 million (US$7,143) on a car and Rp 2 million in
\nkaraoke halls.<\/p>\n
National Police internal affairs question Bambang last June in
\nconnection with the allegation, but the result of the
\ninvestigation was not made public.<\/p>",
