Bambang Wasgito was<br>\ninstalled as the Bogor Police chief on Tuesday, replacing Sr.<br>\nComr. Anton Bachrul Alam who had been in office for 14 months, in<br>\na ceremony led by West Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Dadang<br>\nGarnida.<\/p>\n<p>Anton, formerly Jakarta Police spokesman, was appointed head<br>\nof the Bali Police's internal affairs division.<\/p>\n<p>Before being installed as Bogor Police chief, Bambang served<br>\nat the National Police transnational crime division since last<br>\nAugust. His promotion occurred after an extortion allegation had<br>\nbeen leveled against him.<\/p>\n<p>His new position has been questioned by Police Watch.<\/p>\n<p>\"The public knows that Bambang has a bad record. I think his<br>\ninstallment will have a negative impact on the police's attempt<br>\nto improve their image,\" said Rashid Lubis, chairman of Police<br>\nWatch. \"It proves collusion still exists within the police.\"<\/p>\n<p>In mid last year, Bambang was accused of extorting money from<br>\nseveral traditional Chinese medicine vendors. The National Police<br>\nalso received copies of receipts suggesting that Bambang and some<br>\nof his subordinates had received millions of rupiah from managers<br>\nof gambling and entertainment dens in Glodok, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The receipts revealed, among other things, that Bambang had<br>\nspent Rp 60 million (US$7,143) on a car and Rp 2 million in<br>\nkaraoke halls.<\/p>\n<p>National Police internal affairs question Bambang last June in<br>\nconnection with the allegation, but the result of the<br>\ninvestigation was not made public.<\/p>",
