Cop killer gets 16 years<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A 23-year-old student of the Jakarta-based
\nJayabaya University was sentenced to 16 years in jail yesterday
\nby the East Jakarta district court for his role in the brutal
\nmurder of Police Sgt. Bambang Sumarno.<\/p>\n
\"Evidence and witnesses proved conclusively that defendant
\nIman Alamin took part in the murder and later kept the victim's
\ngun as well as its ammunition,\" presiding judge I Gede Ketut
\nSukarata said while reading his verdict.<\/p>\n
The convicted man closed his eyes and tried to remain calm
\nwhile the judge announced the sentence.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor B. Gultom had earlier demanded the court sentence
\nAlamin, whom the he labeled the mastermind of the killing, to 18
\nyears.<\/p>\n
The court, however, found that Alamin did not mastermind the
\nbrutal slaying which occurred at an empty house in the Kayu Putih
\narea. The house belongs to Alamin's parents.<\/p>\n
But all evidence, including the lethal 22-centimeter-long
\nknife and the victim's pistol, was found at Alamin's residence.<\/p>\n
The judges said that Alamin had broken the law by housing
\nunlicensed guns and blades.<\/p>\n
The defendant's lawyer, Sawir Achmad, told the court that he
\nwill appeal to a higher court.<\/p>\n
\"Alamin knew nothing about the killing. He himself was shocked
\nwhen he returned to the living room and found the sergeant dead,\"
\nSawir told reporters on the courthouse steps.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Gultom had earlier told the court that Alamin
\nordered his two cronies, Boy Herowantana and Arnold Mamusung,
\nboth currently facing separate trials in the same case, to drug
\nand then kill the victim in the wee hours of Aug. 26, 1993.<\/p>\n
According to the prosecutor, Alamin masterminded the killing
\nbecause he wanted to posses the sergeant's gun.<\/p>\n
Alamin initially asked the police to check his house. He told
\nsergeant Bambang Sumarno that the house had been frequently
\nburglarized.<\/p>\n
During the five-month trial, Alamin had repeatedly denied his
\nwritten testimony that he masterminded the killing, saying that
\ndozens of police officers extracted the confession from him by
\ntorture.<\/p>\n
According to Alamin's version, Bambang visited the house and
\nspoke with him about the security problem, a discussion which
\nlater escalated into a quarrel.<\/p>\n
Alamin said that he never asked his two colleagues to seize
\nthe policeman's gun, much less kill the man.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, two friends of Alamin, who were both highly
\nintoxicated, entered the living room, brawled with Bambang and
\nstabbed the police officer to death while Alamin was out of the
\nhouse buying cigarettes.<\/p>\n
Afterwards, the three young thugs cleaned the living room,
\nburned the policeman's body and dumped it in a rubber plantation
\nin Cianjur, West Java.<\/p>\n
\"I need to take some time to think about this,\" Alamin told
\nthe court when he was asked whether he objected to the verdict.
