Coordinating on sports programs to be improved<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs held a
\none-day workshop yesterday, with the objective of improving
\ncoordination with other government agencies involved in the
\nimplementation of national sports programs.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs outlines programs,
\nand coordinates with 17 government agencies, including the
\nMinistry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Home Affairs
\nand the Ministry of Justice, in carrying out the programs.<\/p>\n
Despite their established functions, discrepancies, which
\nclearly show a lack of coordination among them, still occur
\noccasionally, Imam Suyudi, an assistant to the sports and youth
\naffairs minister, told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
In the sexual harassment case involving a Chinese coach hired
\nby a top badminton club, for instance, virtually none of the
\ngovernment agencies were informed in the first instance, Suyudi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Even the Badminton Association of Indonesia was informed only
\nafter news about the allegation appeared in the media. The
\nincidents happened over a period of two years but were only
\ndisclosed last March and Fang Kai Shiang, whom the Bimantara
\nTangkas badminton club hired in 1991, returned to China last
\nFebruary.<\/p>\n
The workshop, which was led by two Australian experts on
\nsports management, Mark McElligott and Alan D. Roberts, included
\ngroup discussions on strategies to make communications more
\neffective, how to increase social and economic importance on
\nsports and how to make government-run sports organizations more
\nprofessionals.<\/p>\n
Following the workshop, the Minister of Sports and Youth
\nAffairs, Hayono Isman, will hold a meeting today with director
\ngenerals of the 17 other ministries and government agencies,
\nasking for their support on improving communications and mutual
\nunderstanding in implementing the national sports programs.<\/p>\n
As for Indonesia's absence in the biennial Arafura Sports
\nFestival in Darwin, which started last Saturday, Suyudi said that
\nIndonesia could not take part in the festival due to its
\npreparations for the 18th Southeast Asian Games in Chiang Mai,
