Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli\nHasan (Zulhas) stated that the government is accelerating the\ndevelopment of waste-to-energy (PSEL) facilities in 30 projects spanning\ndozens of regions.<\/p>\n
He said the acceleration stems from direct instructions from the\nPresident to tackle the waste emergency, especially in areas with\naccumulations exceeding 1,000 tons per day.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing the President\u2019s directive, we are accelerating PSEL\ndevelopment to resolve the waste emergency,\u201d Zulhas said after a limited\ncoordination meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He explained that the initial PSEL development plan was proposed for\naround 34 locations, later adjusted to 33 sites covering 61 regencies\nand cities.<\/p>\n
However, he continued, several locations were merged into service\nareas, resulting in 30 projects.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe initially proposed 34 to the President, but some were combined,\ncovering a total of 61 regencies and cities,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
According to him, the 30 projects still encompass 61 regencies and\ncities by adopting a regional merger approach within single\nprojects.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have finalised 30 today. But these 30 actually consist of 61\nregencies and cities; the number is 30 due to some agglomerations or\nmergers,\u201d Zulhas remarked.<\/p>\n
He noted that these PSEL projects have a processing capacity of\naround 14.4 million tons of waste per year. This amount is equivalent to\napproximately 22.5% of the national waste accumulation.<\/p>\n
He added that the remaining 77.5% of waste will be addressed through\nother approaches, including management in office sectors, markets,\nschools, and public facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 77.5% includes urban areas, industrial zones, villages and\nsub-districts, besides households; we will resolve it in four years. The\ntechnology is already available,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He emphasised that the government possesses various waste processing\ntechnologies, such as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and composting, which\ncan be applied according to regional needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe already have the technology, whether waste-to-energy, RDF, or\ncomposting; essentially, if we are willing, this waste can be resolved,\u201d\nhe disclosed.<\/p>\n
Zulhas then explained that several projects have advanced to\nsubsequent stages, including those that have undergone tender\nprocesses.<\/p>\n
He mentioned four locations that have entered the tender phase:\nGreater Denpasar, Bekasi City, Greater Bogor, and Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Additionally, other projects such as Palembang, South Tangerang,\nMakassar, Greater Lampung, Greater Semarang, Greater Surabaya, and Medan\nhave been verified and are ready to enter the auction stage.<\/p>\n
According to him, the government targets the initial batch of\nprojects to commence operations in 2027, while the others are slated for\ncompletion by May 2028.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first batch is in 2027, and the rest targeted for May 2028,\u201d he\nstated.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Zulhas affirmed that PSEL development forms part of the\ngovernment\u2019s initial strategy to handle the national waste issue more\nsystematically.<\/p>\n
