        "content": "<p>Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Minister for Legal Affairs,\nHuman Rights, Immigration and Corrections (Menko Kumham Imipas) of the\nRepublic of Indonesia, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, has firmly stated that the\npublic must not take the law into their own hands, as doing so violates\nprevailing regulations and human rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public must not engage in vigilante justice against people\nsuspected of theft, robbery, mugging or other crimes,\u201d said Yusril Ihza\nMahendra while attending the 37th Graduation Ceremony of the University\nof Bangka Belitung (UBB) at Balun Ijuk, Bangka Regency, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He said that recently problems and widespread unease had arisen in\nsociety over cases of mugging, robbery, theft and the like, but the real\nissue was not those crimes themselves; rather, it was that those\nsuspected or accused of committing such offences were being captured en\nmasse, beaten and tortured, sometimes to death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis creates new problems because such vigilante actions do not\ncomply with prevailing regulations. That is why I invite the public to\njointly respect human rights and obey the rules in force,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is deeply saddening that the life of a chicken is being treated\nas equal to a human life, and cases like this occur very frequently in\nother regions as well,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n<p>He urged his entire staff, the police and regional governments to\neducate the public so that people do not take the law into their own\nhands against those suspected of theft, robbery and other crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public must not engage in vigilante justice, but must instead\nuphold the law by handing perpetrators over to the police so that the\napplicable legal process can run its course,\u201d he said.<\/p>",
