AHY argues that infrastructure is essential for realising sustainability, emphasising that adaptation to climate change is a current, not a future, cost. He highlights Indonesia's accelerated adaptive infrastructure programme, including the 575-kilometre Giant Sea Wall Pantura, to protect coastal livelihoods, food security and industrial zones; remarks are complemented by Temasek chair Teo Chee Hean's emphasis on climate adaptation as crucial for global economic stability and long-term development.

Infrastructure is where sustainability becomes real,” said AHY in a
written statement on Tuesday, 19 May 2026. The remarks were made during
his speech at Ecosperity Week 2026 in Singapore. According to AHY,
climate change can no longer be viewed as a threat of the future, but as
a real challenge facing society today. He cited the major disaster
caused by Cyclone Senyar in Sumatra, which left more than a thousand
deaths and affected millions. “Adaptation is no longer a future
scenario. Adaptation is a cost we must pay today,” he said. AHY also
explained that the Indonesian Government is accelerating the
construction of adaptive infrastructure, including the Giant Sea Wall
Pantura project, which has become one of the national strategic
priorities in the Prabowo Subianto era. The project, 575 kilometres
long, is designed not only for shore protection but also to safeguard
food security, industrial areas, and the safety of millions of coastal
residents in Java. “This is not just a seawall. This is about protecting
the future of the country’s economy and our society,” AHY said.
Meanwhile, Temasek Chairman Teo Chee Hean also stressed that climate
adaptation is now as important as climate mitigation. According to him,
adaptive capacity will be a key factor in maintaining global economic
stability and the long-term continuity of development. For additional
information, AHY was accompanied by Deputy for Housing Development and
Infrastructure Coordination, Ronny Hutahayan; and Special Staff to the
Minister Sigit Raditya and Herzaky Mahendra Putra.
