        "content": "<p>JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com \u2013 The government intends to convert millions of\npetrol-powered motorcycles to electric ones through a conversion\npathway.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for KOSMIK (Indonesian Electric Motorcycle Community),\nHendro Sutono, assesses that conversion is not the most effective\nsolution for large-scale implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Conceptually, converting petrol motorcycles to electric sounds\nappealing. However, the process is not simple as it requires changes to\nthe vehicle\u2019s main components.<\/p>\n<p>Various electric motorcycle brands currently offer a range of models\nthat can be purchased like conventional motorcycles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe after-sales ecosystem is developing; what is lacking is real and\nstructured incentives for consumers to switch,\u201d Hendro told Kompas.com\non Friday (3\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>According to him, a more realistic solution might be to introduce a\ntrade-in programme for old motorcycles with new electric ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scheme does not need to be complicated. Consumers bring their\nold petrol motorcycle to an official dealer, surrender it as part of the\npayment for a new electric motorcycle, and receive a discount or subsidy\nfor the difference,\u201d said Hendro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe used petrol motorcycle is then not resold to the market but\nenters an official recycling pathway. Its components are sorted by type,\nmetals are melted and reprocessed, and non-recyclable materials are\nmanaged according to environmental standards,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hendro, this phenomenon can even be likened to the\nclassic \u201cShip of Theseus\u201d paradox.<\/p>\n<p>If a ship is replaced part by part until no original components\nremain, is it still the same ship?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne transaction, two results at once. The population of petrol\nmotorcycles decreases in a real and permanent way, not on paper, not\nassuming that converted motorcycles will not break down on the road six\nmonths later,\u201d said Hendro.<\/p>\n<p>He added that this scheme also provides benefits to various parties,\nfrom consumers to the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers get reliable new vehicles.
