Controversial busway lane<\/p>\n

Jakarta will soon have its special busway, a project that,
\naccording to the Jakarta provincial administration, meets the
\naspirations of Jakarta's residents as was evident from the great
\nenthusiasm visitors to the Jakarta Fair expressed when they were
\npresented with a prototype of the project.<\/p>\n
For the Jakarta residents themselves, however, many things are
\nstill unanswered about this project, particularly regarding the
\nprospective passengers of the buses that will use this special
\nlane. Reportedly, the prospective passengers are those working
\nalong Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin and going to work either by
\npublic transportation or by private vehicle. Obviously, these
\npeople account for only a small fraction of the population of
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Given the fact that the number of motorized vehicles passing
\nalong Jl. Sudirman and Jl. Thamrin is increasing and that traffic
\ncongestion in these streets has been caused by an insufficient
\nnumber of lanes, the establishment of this busway will only
\naggravate the traffic condition. The presence of this busway also
\nmeans the loss of green areas otherwise serving as water
\ncatchments.<\/p>\n
The bus stops put up along the busway are also a waste of
\nbillions of rupiah as they cannot be properly used by senior
\ncitizens and people in wheelchairs.<\/p>\n
