Consumers protest over developer<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of people staged a protest at the state
\nminister of public housing's office yesterday, demanding that a
\ndeveloper return their down payments<\/p>\n
The consumers, mostly blue-collar workers, said the developer,
\nPT Helindo Cipta, had broken its promise to build houses for them
\neven though they had paid down payments almost two years ago.<\/p>\n
\"We want our money returned now. We are tired of waiting and
\nwasting our time. The developer always breaks its promises,\"
\nspokesman for the protesters, Suparman, said. \"The developer has
\nfailed to keep its promise to give our money back. The company
\nhas so far only returned the money to 530 people.\"<\/p>\n
He said about 2,000 people had paid between Rp 750,000
\n(US$321.88) and Rp 1.5 million for 21-square-meter houses in
\nMekarsari village, Ajeg district, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
The developer told buyers that monthly installments ranged
\nfrom Rp 45,000 to Rp 55,000, said Iman, another buyer.<\/p>\n
\"I was interested in the offer as I have never owned a house,\"
\nthe garment factory worker said.<\/p>\n
The 50-hectare location, on which 3,000 small houses were to
\nbe built, still belongs to local residents as the developer had
\nnot yet appropriated it, Suparman said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the company's executive Herri Suherman asked the
\nbuyers to be patient, saying the company would eventually return
\ntheir money.<\/p>\n
Herri blamed the problem on the company's former executives
\nfor the postponement of the housing project.<\/p>\n
He said the company had appropriated the land after
\ncooperating with a different developer, PT Mega Metropolitan.
