Consumers demand justice<\/p>\n
The explanation by the chief director of state electricity
\ncompany PLN on Sunday's power outage underscores the position of
\nconsumers. They are all too easily penalized for being late in
\npaying their bills yet it is difficult for them to demand
\naccountability from PLN.<\/p>\n
The minister of mines and energy's statement that the power
\ncut was planned casts an even more serious light on the
\nsituation. The providers of our public services can implement
\nmeasures that are planned in advance and damaging to consumers
\nwithout even bothering to notify them.<\/p>\n
In the past few years, however, we have witnessed a growing
\nawareness among our people on their rights and obligations,
\noccurring at the same time their tolerance of social and economic
\ninjustice declines. Our people have a heightened awareness of
\ntheir position in society and no longer submit passively to
\nunjust and arbitrary acts.<\/p>\n
The continuation of this trend will lead to the emergence of a
\nconsumer society in which the public is fully aware of its rights
\nand obligations, and in which rational thinking prevails. The
\npeople, having fulfilled their obligations as consumers, will
\ndemand better service in return.<\/p>\n
The power blackout should serve as a reminder for us to start
\nimproving the quality of our public services.<\/p>\n
