Consumer group to probe gasoline sold in Jakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The chairperson of the Indonesian Consumers
\nProtection Foundation said yesterday that the foundation plans to
\nsample and survey the gasoline and diesel fuel sold in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"The foundation will conduct the survey in 1995 and samples of
\ngasoline will be taken from gas stations all over Jakarta,"
\nZoemrotin K. Soesilo said, adding that similar testing was done
\nalmost ten years ago in 1985.<\/p>\n
Zoemrotin said that recent public complaints about the bad
\nquality of gasoline and diesel fuel sold in Jakarta, and also
\nlast week's arrest of a married couple for selling diesel fuel
\nblended with lubricating oil and kerosene, prompted the
\nfoundation to conduct the survey.<\/p>\n
The married couple, identified by the police as TM and Yul,
\nown a gasoline distribution company in Tangerang.<\/p>\n
However, J. Damanik, the acting head of Jakarta fuel
\ndistribution and superintendent's office of Pertamina, said that
\nthere are no gas stations in Jakarta selling gasoline mixed with
\nother substances.<\/p>\n
He said that Pertamina has tested the quality of almost all of
\nits gas stations in town and has never found any "bogus" gasoline
\nsold.<\/p>\n
Kompas daily reported on Friday that Damanik pledged to take
\nstern measures against any gas stations in the city found to have
\nmixed gasoline with kerosene, though it will do so anonymously.<\/p>\n
Zoemrotin lashed out at this decision, saying it was
\nineffective.<\/p>\n
She partly attributes the gasoline problem gasoline in Jakarta
\nto collusion among officials at Pertamina's depot, gas station
\nowners and employees and, the gasoline truck drivers.<\/p>\n
Zoemrotin said that to decrease the possibility of such
\npractices and to increase the standard of gasoline in Jakarta,
\nthe government should establish another body specially in charge
\nof supervising the quality of gasoline and recording the amount
\nof gasoline pumped.<\/p>\n
At the moment, the only institution which supervises the
\nquality of gasoline is Pertamina.<\/p>\n
Last year, a joint task force of Pertamina and the
\ncoordinating agency for the support of national stability and
\nsecurity, made on-site inspections to monitor the quality of fuel
\nand lubricating oil sold in local markets.(mas)<\/p>",
